Abel’s Island by William Steig is the story about a mouse, but not just any ordinary mouse. He is a highly privileged, spoiled, and wealthy mouse who comes to face a test of survival when he is swept away from his home and loved ones and finds himself alone on an island. This is a wonderful tale of survival, coping, personal growth and self-awareness and is loaded with wonderful vocabulary and insight. The reading level is 5.9 and is a Newbery Honor Book.
